Smart Risk Management Tips for Railway Stock Traders

Active trading in public sector railway stocks can be rewarding, but it can also be unforgiving for those who ignore risk. Short-term participants who follow the IRFC Share Price on daily charts know how quickly sentiment can swing from optimism to caution. The same is true for anyone tracking the RVNL Share Price during volatile sessions, when a sharp move in either direction can test patience and discipline. Strong risk management, rather than prediction skill, is what keeps traders in the game over the long run.

Start with Capital Protection

The first rule of trading is to protect your capital. Before thinking about how much you can gain from a trade, think about how much you are willing to lose. As a general rule, many traders set a percentage of their total trading capital as a limit for a single trade, say one or two per cent.

This approach is useful because a series of losses will not cripple your account, and it prevents you from getting emotional and taking bigger risks.

Use Stop-Loss Levels

A stop-loss is a level at which you cut your losses on a losing trade and exit the position. Set your stop-loss at a theoretically sensible level (e.g. below a nearby support zone) and not randomly. The key to a stop-loss is to adhere to it. One of the most common errors made by traders is to move their stop-loss to a higher level because they expect a recovery in the price of the stock they are trading. Set your exit strategy before you enter a trade and stick to it, no matter what.

Respect Volatility and Liquidity

Railway PSU stocks are notorious for their volatility. They sometimes exhibit sharp movements and huge volumes of trades during rallies and crashes. More volatility means smaller position sizes and wider stop-losses. Always assess the average true range of the stock before placing a trade. Assess liquidity as well. Stocks with high liquidity let you enter and exit positions without much slippage.

Do not get caught in circuit fuses. In a circuit fuse situation, prices tend to swing to the extreme and trap retail investors who have positions

Avoid Common Behavioural Traps

The fear of missing out leads many investors to buy into a stock that has risen sharply in price. Revenge trading after a loss makes you take even bigger risks in an attempt to recoup your losses. Overconfidence after a winning streak tempts you to take unrealised profits and take bigger positions than normal. Keep a trading journal to help curb these behavioural shortcomings. Keeping a trading journal is a good way to understand your strengths and weaknesses as a trader. Record in it the rationale for every trade, along with the results and how you felt when taking the trade. Review your journal to see why you take certain trades and correct your mistakes.

Stay Informed Without Getting Overwhelmed

Announcements of orders, results, policy changes, government stakes in companies, among others, can influence prices. Stay away from rumours that are spread on social media and read official announcements on stock exchanges. Know the dates for results announcements, board meetings, dividend record dates, and so on. Such days usually witness sharp price movements and should be approached with caution. Avoid holding large positions in a stock over holidays or events that could affect the stock’s performance, unless you are completely prepared to bear the consequences of such a move.

Balance Trading and Long-Term Wealth Creation

Trading is a tool for balancing your long-term wealth creation. Set aside some money for the long term and do not invest money that you do not have. Remember that tax cuts on short-term capital gains and brokerage and transaction fees cut into your profits. If trading is negatively affecting your finances and/or sleep, take a break. There will always be opportunities to make money. But once you lose money, it can be difficult to recover.
